Sleep and Sugar

Having trouble controlling your blood sugar? The answer may be in the bedroom. Turns out that blood sugar is affected by how much - and how well - you sleep.

The latest study included 161 African Americans with Type 2 diabetes. The patients slept only about 6 hours per night, on average, and 71% of them reported poor sleep quality.

Researchers measured each patient's hemoglobin A1C level, a strong indicator of blood sugar control. Higher A1C readings are connected to poor blood sugar control...and the folks who reported little or poor sleep had higher average A1C levels.

These findings suggest that conquering the sleep issue can have a positive impact on blood sugar control, a major concern for many people with diabetes. If you have Type 2 diabetes and you've been having trouble sleeping, there are safe natural ways to help yourself sleep better and longer, with no troubling next-day drug hangover. One great option is valerian, a highly effective sleep aid proven to work in over one hundred studies. This herb has been used for centuries to help insomniacs get to sleep. Take one teaspoon of liquid extract about thirty minutes before bedtime.
